Impact
A stack-based buffer overflow is present in the authd process of Juniper Networks Junos OS. When a configured RADIUS server sends a malicious response, the overflow can cause authd to crash or execute arbitrary code with root privileges. This results in a denial of authentication service or full privilege escalation on the affected device.
Affected Systems
Juniper Networks Junos OS releases 23.2R2-S7.7, 23.4R2-S8.13, 24.2R2-S5.5, 24.4R2-S5, 25.2R2-S2, 25.4R1-S3, 25.4R2, 26.2R1-S2, 26.2R2, 26.4R1, and all subsequent releases are affected. Devices running these versions with RADIUS authentication enabled are at risk.
Risk and Exploitability
The CVSS score of 8.7 classifies this as a high-severity vulnerability. No EPSS score is available, but the lack of a known workaround and the exploit requiring only a malicious RADIUS response make the risk significant. The vulnerability is not listed in CISA KEV, yet the impact level and the fact that the flaw is exploitable remotely through a trusted authentication path warrant immediate remediation.
