Impact
A stack‑based buffer overflow exists in the kmd component of Juniper Networks Junos OS on MX Series routers. The flaw allows an unauthenticated attacker to deliver specially crafted IKE certificate‑based packets that overflow a buffer and execute arbitrary code with root privileges, providing full control of the device. This vulnerability is triggered only when IKE is enabled with an RSA‑signature IKE policy. The vulnerability is classified as CWE‑121.
Affected Systems
All Junos OS releases on MX Series devices prior to 21.2R3‑S11, 21.4R3‑S12, 22.2R3‑S8, 22.3R3‑S5, and 22.4R3‑S9 are affected. The vendor has released patch updates starting with 23.2R2‑S7.7 and continuing through 23.4R2‑S8.13, 24.2R2‑S5.5, 24.4R2‑S5, 25.2R2‑S2, 25.4R1‑S3, 25.4R2, 26.2R1‑S2, 26.2R2, 26.4R1, and all subsequent releases. Devices running any of the affected versions should be upgraded to one of these patched releases.
Risk and Exploitability
The CVSS score of 9.3 and the EPSS score of less than 1% indicate a critical severity but a very low probability of exploitation in the current threat landscape. The flaw can be triggered over the network by an unauthenticated attacker sending crafted IKE certificate packets, which does not require valid authentication. Because the vulnerability provides root‑level execution, it poses a high risk of full system compromise. The issue is not listed in CISA’s KEV catalog at this time.
