Description
Appium is a cross-platform automation framework for all kinds of apps, built on top of the W3C WebDriver protocol. Prior to 7.2.6, @appium/support ZIP extraction accepts an archive entry that creates a symbolic link to a location outside the extraction directory and then accepts a later regular-file entry whose legitimate name resolves through that link. The lexical containment check examines entry names without validating the symlink target or the real destination, so an attacker-controlled archive can write files to arbitrary locations writable by the Appium process. This is distinct from the earlier parent-directory entry-name traversal fixed in 7.0.6 because the bypass uses no parent-directory or absolute entry name. Depending on the writable destination, the arbitrary file write can overwrite configuration, startup scripts, or executables and lead to code execution. This issue is fixed in version 7.2.6.

Impact

Appium’s ZIP extraction routine in @appium/support allowed a malicious archive to create a symbolic link that points outside the extraction directory. The extractor checks only the filenames, not the real target of the symlink. An attacker can then include a separate file whose name resolves through the symlink, causing the file to be written to an arbitrary location writable by the Appium process. This arbitrary file write can overwrite configuration files, startup scripts, or executables, providing a path to code execution.

Affected Systems

The vulnerability exists in the Appium automation framework, specifically in the @appium/support package version 7.2.5 and earlier. Any instance of Appium running with that package is affected; the fix is delivered in version 7.2.6.

Risk and Exploitability

The CVSS score of 6.5 identifies it as a moderate severity flaw. No EPSS score is available, and the vulnerability is not listed in the CISA KEV catalog, suggesting lower but still present threat. The exploit requires delivering a crafted ZIP archive to the Appium process, which is likely to receive such archives during normal test‑case execution. If successful, the attacker can write to any file path that is writable by Appium, which in many cases includes directories where configuration or executable files reside, thereby enabling code execution.

Remediation

No solution or workaround provided in the CVE record.

OpenCVE Recommended Actions

  • Upgrade @appium/support to version 7.2.6 or later
  • Ensure the Appium process runs with the least privilege necessary and restrict file write permissions to the extraction directory
  • Avoid feeding untrusted ZIP archives to the Appium server
