Description
The Membership & User Roles for WooCommerce (Automatic Role Changer) plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Privilege Escalation in versions up to, and including, 20260828. This is due to the `maybe_add_role_to_user()` function unconditionally re-assigning every role stored in the `dfxwcrc_foreign_roles` user meta cache without verifying that each cached role is still actively assigned by the external provider — a condition made permanent by `remember_foreign_roles()`, which merges new foreign roles into the cache but never evicts roles that have since been revoked. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers with subscriber-level access and above to restore a previously revoked Administrator role to their own account, gaining full administrative control of the site, by triggering any role-assignment event such as completing a purchase for a role-mapped product. Exploitation requires Replace Roles mode to be enabled and the attacker's account to have previously received Administrator legitimately through a separate role-management mechanism while the plugin was active, so that `administrator` was written into the `dfxwcrc_foreign_roles` user meta cache before the external provider revoked it.

Impact

The vulnerability permits an authenticated user with subscriber or higher role to elevate privileges by restoring a previously revoked Administrator role, a CWE-269: Improper Privilege Management flaw. The flaw lies in the plugin’s role reassignment logic, which reassigns every role stored in a cached user meta field without verifying current assignment status. An attacker who had previously been granted the Administrator role by the plugin can later trigger a role‑assignment event, such as completing a purchase, to cause the cached role to be reapplied, resulting in full administrative control of the site.

Affected Systems

davefx Membership & User Roles for WooCommerce (Automatic Role Changer) plugin for WordPress, all releases up to and including 2026‑08‑28.

Risk and Exploitability

The CVSS score of 7.5 indicates a high likelihood of a serious attack. EPSS is below 1 %, showing low yet non‑zero risk of exploitation to date. The vulnerability is not listed in the KEV catalog. The attack vector requires the attacker to be authenticated and possess the subscriber role or greater, with the Replace Roles mode enabled. Additionally, the attacker’s account must have previously held the Administrator role while the plugin was active, so that the role was cached. Under these conditions, the flaw can be exploited without additional privileges, leading to a complete loss of site security.

  • If an immediate update is not possible, disable the Replace Roles mode in the plugin settings to prevent cached roles from being reapplied.
  • Manually clear the dfxwcrc_foreign_roles user meta field for affected accounts to remove stale Administrator credentials and re‑validate role assignments.
