Description
Ente provides end-to-end encrypted cloud services and security tools. Prior to server image 2026.07.09, the POST /emergency-contacts/approve-recovery endpoint authorized approval using a client-supplied userID and updated an emergency recovery session using only its client-supplied recovery-session UUID. An accepted emergency contact could submit the contact's own identifier, transition the victim's session from WAITING to READY, clear wait_till, retrieve recovery information, and continue account recovery before the owner-configured notice period expired. Exploitation of the approval bypass required the victim to have previously added and accepted the attacker as an emergency contact, and it did not create recovery rights for an arbitrary account. Separately, the same insufficiently scoped update pattern affected the reject and stop recovery transitions, allowing a user who knew another recovery-session UUID to potentially cancel a session to which the user was not a party. This issue is fixed in server image 2026.07.09.

Impact

Ente’s server allowed a POST to /emergency-contacts/approve-recovery that accepted a client‑supplied userID and updated only the provided recovery-session UUID. A contact that had already been added and accepted could submit its own identifier, move the victim’s session from WAITING to READY, clear the wait_till flag, retrieve recovery information, and complete account recovery before the owner‑configured notice period expired. This bypass does not grant recovery rights to arbitrary accounts and requires the attacker to have prior access as an emergency contact; a similar insufficiently scoped update also affected reject and stop recovery transitions for unknown sessions.

Affected Systems

The vulnerability applied to Ente self‑hosted server images released prior to 2026.07.09, specifically the server package hosted on ente:ente and the container image on ente:ghcr.io/ente/server. Users running any entrustn server version before that build are affected.

Risk and Exploitability

The CVSS score of 7.1 classifies the flaw as high severity. No EPSS score is available, and the vulnerability is not listed in the CISA KEV catalog. Exploitation requires that the attacker already be an accepted emergency contact and know a victim’s active recovery‑session UUID, implying that the attack vector is most likely remote through the web API or web interface when the victim is online. The impact is the premature restoration of account access, potentially exposing the victim’s data before the intended notice delay.

Remediation

No solution or workaround provided in the CVE record.

OpenCVE Recommended Actions

  • Update the Ente server to image 2026.07.09 or newer to apply the fix for the approval bypass
  • Review and remove any emergency contacts that are not trusted, and reset any pending recovery sessions to eliminate the time window for abuse
  • Monitor server logs for usage of /emergency-contacts/approve-recovery and related endpoints, and consider disabling the emergency recovery feature temporarily if a patch cannot be deployed immediately
