Description
The Tapo
Cloud MQTT broker contains a broken access control vulnerability in a proxy
topic used by authenticated Tapo devices to request service tokens. The broker
does not verify that the device ID supplied in a proxy request belongs to the
authenticated device. An attacker who owns a Tapo device and knows another
device's ID may obtain a device token scoped to the target device and use it to
upload attacker-controlled content to the target user's Tapo Cloud storage. The
content may then be presented in the Tapo app as a legitimate event.

Successful
exploitation may allow an attacker to upload attacker-controlled content that
is presented to a target user as a legitimate Tapo event, retrieve internal
service information through crafted proxy requests, or abuse Tapo Cloud
outbound request capability in activity that could affect service
availability.

Impact

The Tapo Cloud MQTT broker contains a broken access control flaw on a proxy topic that authenticated devices use to request service tokens. Because the broker does not confirm that the device ID supplied in the request matches the authenticated device, an attacker who owns a Tapo device and knows another device’s ID can obtain a token scoped to the target device. With that token the attacker can upload attacker‑controlled content that will appear as a legitimate event in the target user’s Tapo app, or issue crafted proxy requests to retrieve internal service information or disrupt service availability.

Affected Systems

TP‑Link Tapo Cloud Service is affected. Any device using the Tapo Cloud MQTT broker that supports the vulnerable proxy topic is at risk, particularly those firmware builds that have not applied the vendor’s fix.

Risk and Exploitability

The CVSS score of 8.3 indicates a high severity, with potential for significant confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact. The EPSS score is not available, so the exploitation probability is unclear, and the vulnerability is not listed in the CISA KEV catalog. Likely, the attacker must own a legitimate Tapo device and know another device’s identifier; the attack is conducted via MQTT, a remote protocol, so no special network connectivity beyond the cloud connection is required.

Remediation

No solution or workaround provided in the CVE record.

OpenCVE Recommended Actions

  • Update the device firmware or apply TP‑Link’s official security patch that enforces proper device ID validation on the MQTT broker.
  • If no patch is available, disable the vulnerable proxy topic or restrict MQTT access to trusted devices only, ensuring device ID verification is performed by alternative means.
  • Monitor MQTT traffic for anomalous token‑issuance or unauthorized upload attempts and set alerts for such activity.
  • Apply network segmentation and firewall rules to limit device‑to‑cloud traffic, reducing the attack surface for token misuse.
