Impact
Hydra’s instantiate() target blacklist was intended to prevent certain callables from being used, but between versions 1.3.4 and 1.3.6 and 1.4.0.dev9 the check was incomplete. Execution wrappers such as timeit.timeit, deserialization through pickle.loads, aliasing, and other indirect invocation patterns can conceal the true target callable, allowing a malicious caller to bypass the blacklist and execute arbitrary code with the application’s privileges. The weakness is classified as CWE‑184 and CWE‑470.
Affected Systems
The Hydra framework produced by hydra‑ecosystem is affected. Vulnerable releases are 1.3.4 and 1.3.5. Any installation that accepts externally controlled Hydra configuration files is susceptible.
Risk and Exploitability
The CVSS score of 7.8 places the issue in the high‑severity range. The EPSS score is < 1%, and the vulnerability is not listed in CISA KEV. Attackers must supply or force the application to load untrusted Hydra configuration files; this configuration injection can trigger the bypass, leading to code execution with the application’s privileges. The impact is significant, as exploitation allows full control over the target system.
