Description
A heap-based buffer overflow flaw was found in Cyrus SASL. The add_to_challenge() function in the DIGEST-MD5 plugin computes the size of the buffer needed for a challenge/response field before DIGEST-MD5 quoting is applied, but does not recompute that size when quoting (escaping special characters) makes the value longer. The under-sized buffer is then passed to strcat(), causing a heap-based out-of-bounds write whose size depends on attacker-controlled input. A malicious or on-path DIGEST-MD5 (or HTTP Digest) server can trigger this flaw in a connecting client by supplying a crafted challenge field, such as realm or nonce, most likely resulting in a crash of the client application.

Impact

A heap-based buffer overflow is present in the add_to_challenge() function of the Cyrus SASL DIGEST-MD5 plugin. The function calculates the buffer size for a challenge/response string before escaping special characters but fails to adjust the size afterward. When an attacker supplies a specially crafted challenge value, such as a long realm or nonce, the function writes past the allocated buffer into a concatenation operation, potentially causing a crash or memory corruption. The flaw may lead to denial of service or a crash.

Affected Systems

Version information is not specified in the CVE data, but the vulnerability affects Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 through 10, Red Hat Hardened Images, Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform 4, and Red Hat Hummingbird 1. All these distributions deploy the Cyrus‑SASL implementation that contains the vulnerable DIGEST-MD5 plugin. Clients and servers running these products that enable DIGEST‑MD5 (or HTTP Digest) authentication are susceptible.

Risk and Exploitability

The CVSS score of 7.5 indicates a high severity. The EPSS score is not available, so historical exploitation data cannot be evaluated, and the vulnerability is not listed in the CISA KEV catalog. The likely attack vector is network‑based: an attacker who can position a malicious or on‑path DIGEST‑MD5 or HTTP Digest server can send a crafted challenge during the SASL authentication phase, which triggers the overflow in the connecting client. Because the memory corruption occurs in user space on the client side, the impact may range from a crash to potential exploitation if the overflow can be manipulated.

Remediation

Vendor Workaround

If DIGEST-MD5 authentication is not strictly required, remove the optional cyrus-sasl-md5 package to eliminate the vulnerable plugin: # dnf remove cyrus-sasl-md5 Alternatively, configure client applications to disable DIGEST-MD5 and HTTP Digest authentication methods, prioritizing stronger mechanisms such as GSSAPI or SCRAM. Caveat: Removing cyrus-sasl-md5 removes support for both DIGEST-MD5 and CRAM-MD5 mechanisms. Any client or server process depending on these algorithms will fail to negotiate authentication. Active services utilizing SASL may need to be restarted to unload the plugin from memory.

OpenCVE Recommended Actions

  • Update the cyrus-sasl package to a version that incorporates the vendor’s fix
  • If no patch is available, remove the cyrus-sasl-md5 package to eliminate the vulnerable plugin (dnf remove c-sasl-md5)
  • Alternatively configure client applications to disable DIGEST‑MD5 and HTTP Digest authentication, favoring stronger mechanisms such as GSSAPI or SCRAM
