Description
A flaw has been found in **permission filters** in the **foreman** package. The API loads a filter by its identifier and does not apply the search limit on the caller's permission. A low-privileged network attacker or user must already be allowed to delete filters for one role only. They can delete filters that belong to other unlocked roles. Those other roles then lose the access the deleted filters had granted.

Impact

The flaw resides in the Foreman package used by Red Hat Satellite 6. The API retrieves a permission filter by ID but ignores the caller's search limit, allowing a user who can delete filters for one role to delete filters belonging to other unlocked roles. This results in those roles losing the permissions that the removed filters had granted. The weakness is an authorization bypass identified as CWE‑639.

Affected Systems

This vulnerability affects Red Hat Satellite 6. Systems running version 6 of Satellite that include the API for permission filtering are susceptible. No other vendor or product is currently listed as impacted.

Risk and Exploitability

The CVSS score of 6.5 indicates a moderate severity. The EPSS score is not available, and the vulnerability is not listed in CISA’s KEV catalog, suggesting exploitation is not widely reported or actively used. Attackers must already possess permission to delete filters for at least one role, so the threat is limited to users with those privileges. The risk can be mitigated by applying the vendor’s patch, removing the delete‑permission from delegated roles, and enabling audit logs to detect unauthorized deletions.

Remediation

Vendor Workaround

Filter creation, update, and deletion are audited with the role. Review recent filter audit records for deletions and role changes by delegated filter administrators. Removing those two permissions from delegated roles, or leaving them unlimited and held only by fully trusted administrators, closes the path until a fix is available.

OpenCVE Recommended Actions

  • Apply the vendor‑released patch for Red Hat Satellite 6 once it becomes available.
  • Remove or restrict the delete‑filters permission for delegated or low‑privileged roles, leaving it only for fully trusted administrators.
  • Enable audit logging for filter creations, updates, and deletions and regularly review the logs for unexpected changes.
