Description
The Snazzy Social Media Feed plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Arbitrary File Upload in all versions up to, and including, 2.5 via the (file scope) function. This is due to missing WordPress bootstrap, authentication, capability, and nonce checks in the standalone save-to-cache.php script, combined with insufficient sanitization of the pluginURL parameter before it is written to a web-executable PHP file. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to upload files that may be executable, which makes remote code execution possible. The save-to-cache.php script is directly reachable without loading WordPress; FILTER_SANITIZE_URL — the only filter applied to the pluginURL value — preserves the characters required to craft a valid PHP payload, which is then written verbatim into cached-content/cached-feed.php and immediately executable via a single GET request.

Impact

The Snazzy Social Media Feed plugin allows an attacker to upload arbitrary files because the save-to-cache.php script lacks proper WordPress bootstrap, authentication, capability, and nonce checks. The pluginURL parameter is only sanitised with FILTER_SANITIZE_URL, which preserves characters that enable a PHP payload to be written verbatim to cached-feed.php. If an attacker can trigger the script, the saved file can be executed with a single GET request, giving remote code execution on the WordPress site.

Affected Systems

WordPress sites that have the Snazzy Social Media Feed plugin installed and running versions 2.5 or earlier are vulnerable. The issue exists regardless of whether the plugin is enabled in the WordPress admin, because the vulnerable script is reachable directly without loading WordPress. Any site using the plugin in these versions could be targeted.

Risk and Exploitability

The CVSS score of 9.8 classifies this flaw as critical, reflecting the high impact of remote code execution. The EPSS score of less than 1% indicates that exploit attempts are relatively rare, but the severity remains high, and the vulnerability is not currently listed in CISA’s Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog. An attacker with subscriber‑level credentials can exploit the flaw by sending a crafted file upload to save-to-cache.php and then accessing the resulting cached-feed.php file, completing the attack from a single web request.

No solution or workaround provided in the CVE record.

OpenCVE Recommended Actions

  • Apply the latest official update for Snazzy Social Media Feed that removes the vulnerable endpoint, or uninstall the plugin if it is not required.
  • If an update is not immediately available, block direct access to save-to-cache.php by adding a RewriteRule or Deny statement in the site’s .htaccess so that the script cannot be invoked from the web.
  • Configure the web server to set the cached-feed.php file (and its directory) as non‑executable, or change its file permissions so that PHP code inside it cannot be run, effectively mitigating the risk of post‑upload execution.
