Description
A vulnerability has been identified in
BRAIN2 versions up to and including version 3.09. Under specific installation
conditions, the password of a Windows service account may be written in
cleartext to a setup log file. The issue occurs when Microsoft SQL Server
access is configured using Integrated Security and the Windows account intended
to run the BRAIN2 MainService is specified during execution of the BRAIN2
installation wizard. The setup log file is stored in the
temporary directory of the Windows administrator performing the installation.
This directory is not accessible to standard Windows users and can generally
only be accessed by users with administrative privileges. Successful exploitation could result in the
disclosure of credentials belonging to the configured BRAIN2 service account.

Impact

Under certain installation conditions the service account password used by BRAIN2 can be written in clear text to a setup log file. If the installation wizard is run with Integrated Security against Microsoft SQL Server and the account is specified, the password becomes stored in an unsecured log. This flaw allows an attacker who gains read access to the log through administrative privileges to obtain the credentials of the BRAIN2 service account, potentially enabling full control over the application’s backend.

Affected Systems

Systems running BRAIN2 versions up to and including 3.09 from Bizerba SE & Co. KG are affected. The vulnerability is confined to installations where Integrated Security is employed and the service account is specified during setup.

Risk and Exploitability

The CVSS score of 4.4 indicates a moderate severity. Since the EPSS score is not available and the vulnerability is not listed in CISA KEV, the likelihood of exploitation is uncertain. However, exploitation requires administrative access to the target system, which is a prerequisite. Successful exploitation would lead to disclosure of the BRAIN2 service account credentials and thus could provide attackers with the ability to manipulate the system’s backend and data.

Remediation

Vendor Solution

This vulnerability has been fixed in BRAIN2 version 3.10. Customers are strongly advised to upgrade to BRAIN2 version 3.10 or later.

Vendor Workaround

Until an upgrade can be applied, Bizerba recommends implementing the following measures: ·         Delete BRAIN2 installation log files after successful installation. ·         Restrict administrative access to affected systems. ·         Ensure temporary directories containing installation artifacts are adequately protected. ·         Change the password of the configured service account if credential exposure is suspected. Administrators should review and remove setup log files following the naming convention: Bizerba BRAIN2_<Version>_<InstallationDate>_<InstallationTime>_setup.log

OpenCVE Recommended Actions

  • Upgrade to BRAIN2 version 3.10 or later
  • Delete existing BRAIN2 setup log files after installation
  • Restrict administrative access to the affected systems
  • Ensure temporary directories used during installation are adequately protected
  • If credential exposure is suspected, change the service account password
