Description
The ELEX WordPress HelpDesk & Customer Ticketing System plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to arbitrary file deletion due to insufficient file path validation in the factory_reset function in all versions up to, and including, 3.3.8 This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to delete arbitrary files on the server, which can easily lead to remote code execution when the right file is deleted (such as wp-config.php). This vulnerability is exploitable via a two-step chain: an unauthenticated attacker first stores an arbitrary ticket_attachment_path value by submitting a ticket through the nopriv eh_crm_new_ticket_post AJAX endpoint (whose nonce is publicly exposed via the [wsdesk_support] shortcode), then triggers the factory_reset routine via a GET request to wp-admin/admin.php?page=wsdesk_factory_reset, which is guarded only by is_admin() — a request-type check — rather than a capability check, causing unlink() to be called on the attacker-supplied path.

Impact

The ELEX WordPress HelpDesk & Customer Ticketing System plugin is vulnerable to arbitrary file deletion because the factory_reset function does not properly validate the file path supplied through the ticket_attachment_path parameter. This flaw allows an attacker to delete any file on the web server, including critical WordPress configuration files such as wp-config.php, which can in turn enable remote code execution. The weakness corresponds to CWE‑22, unauthorized file manipulation through insufficient input sanitization.

Affected Systems

The vulnerability affects every installation of ELEX WordPress HelpDesk & Customer Ticketing System up to and including version 3.3.8. No other products or versions are reported as affected by this defect.

Risk and Exploitability

The flaw carries a CVSS score of 9.1, indicating critical severity. Although the EPSS score is not published, the lack of a KEV listing does not diminish the risk; the vulnerability is fully exploitable by unauthenticated users who can first store a controlled ticket_attachment_path through the publicly exposed AJAX endpoint, then trigger the factory_reset routine via a GET request to wp-admin/admin.php?page=wsdesk_factory_reset. Because is_admin() is the only guard used, the flaw can be triggered from remote without needing any administrative credentials.

Remediation

No solution or workaround provided in the CVE record.

OpenCVE Recommended Actions

  • Upgrade the ELEX WordPress HelpDesk & Customer Ticketing System plugin to the latest available version that removes the insecure factory_reset path validation logic.
  • If an upgrade is not immediately possible, block or disable the wsdesk_factory_reset page by restricting access to authenticated administrators only, for example by adding role‑based permission checks or using web‑server rules to deny GET requests to that script for non‑logged‑in users.
  • Restrict file system permissions on the WordPress installation so the web‑server user cannot write to critical directories such as wp-content, thereby limiting the impact of any residual unlink() calls.
