Description
Improper Certificate Validation (CWE-295) in the operating system certificate bundle shipped in the Docker images of APM Server; Auditbeat, Filebeat, Heartbeat, Metricbeat and Packetbeat; Elastic Agent, including Fleet Server and Cloudbeat; Logstash, for TLS connections that use the operating system certificate bundle; Elastic connectors; Universal Profiling (host agent, collector and symbolizer); and Elastic Maps Server. This certificate bundle, a dependency of these products (Dependency on Vulnerable Third-Party Component, CWE-1395), could allow an attacker to intercept or modify TLS-protected traffic via Signature Spoofing by Key Theft (CAPEC-474). The certificate bundle includes root certificate authorities that signed eight eMudhra intermediate certificate authorities whose private keys are compromised. Anyone with these keys can issue a certificate for any host name that these products accept as trusted. Exploitation requires an attacker in a network position between the product and the remote party, who presents a certificate issued with one of the compromised keys.

Impact

Improper Certificate Validation (CWE-295) exists in the operating system certificate bundle shipped with Elastic Docker images. The bundle contains eight eMudhra intermediate certificates whose private keys have been compromised, allowing an attacker to issue trusted certificates for any host name accepted by the affected products. A malicious actor can exploit this flaw to intercept, read, or modify TLS‑protected traffic, thereby compromising confidentiality and integrity.

Affected Systems

The vulnerability affects Elastic Docker images for APM Server, Auditbeat, Filebeat, Heartbeat, Metricbeat, Packetbeat, Elastic Agent (including Fleet Server and Cloudbeat), Logstash, Elastic connectors, Universal Profiling (host agent, collector, symbolizer), and Elastic Maps Server. No specific version information is provided, so all current Docker images containing the bundled OS certificate set are potentially impacted.

Risk and Exploitability

The CVSS score of 7.4 indicates a high severity. The EPSS score is not available, and the vulnerability is not listed in the CISA KEV catalog. The likely attack vector requires an attacker to be positioned between the product and the remote party and to present a certificate issued with a compromised key. If the attacker can intercept network traffic, they can mount a man‑in‑the‑middle attack that is straightforward to execute given the compromised intermediates. Even without a KEV listing, the high CVSS and the ability to spoof certificates make this vulnerability a significant risk to all affected deployments.

Remediation

No solution or workaround provided in the CVE record.

OpenCVE Recommended Actions

  • Pull the latest Elastic Docker images released after ESA‑2026‑237 and redeploy all affected containers.
  • Configure the updated containers to use the bundled certificate store that no longer includes the compromised eMudhra intermediates.
  • Remediate any existing installations by deleting or disabling the eMudhra intermediate certificates from the OS bundle before restarting the services.
  • As a temporary containment measure, block traffic to any certificates issued by the compromised intermediates by adding firewall rules or configuring applications to reject those certificates.
