Impact
The vulnerability is an unbounded allocation of memory in Bandit’s HTTP/2 request body reader. An unauthenticated remote attacker can send an arbitrary number of 1‑byte DATA frames, each of which is stored as a separate list cell and binary term, causing the process memory to grow without limits. This results in a denial of service by exhausting server memory and affects only routes that invoke Plug.Parsers.
Affected Systems
Bandit (mtrudel:bandit) is affected across all releases from 0.3.1 up to, but not including, 1.14.1. The product uses Plug for routing, and the issue impacts any route that parses request bodies on any host running these versions.
Risk and Exploitability
The CVSS score of 8.7 indicates a high severity vulnerability. Exploitation does not require authentication and relies on sending HTTP/2 requests with many small frames. EPSS is not available and the vulnerability is not listed in CISA’s KEV catalog, so risk assessment is based on the inherent characteristics and CVSS. The likely attack vector is remote network access to the HTTP/2 interface and exploitation of Plug.Parsers.
