Description
Vaultwarden is a Bitwarden-compatible server written in Rust. Prior to version 1.37.0, the Vaultwarden icon downloader validates the initial icon host and DNS results but passes favicon URLs parsed from attacker-controlled HTML to get_page_with_referer() without applying should_block_host() to the second-stage host. This flaw bypasses the remediation for CVE-2026-47160, which covered decimal, hexadecimal, octal, and IPv4-mapped IPv6 host normalization, because the second-stage IP-literal favicon fetch does not invoke the custom DNS resolver. A remote unauthenticated attacker can provide a public page whose favicon uses an IP-literal URL, allowing the Vaultwarden server to reach loopback or private and internal addresses. The issue affects instances with internal icon downloading enabled and can expose internal responses that resemble supported images or reveal reachability through timing, status, and cache behavior. This issue is fixed in version 1.37.0.

Impact

The vulnerability is a server‑side request forgery that allows an unauthenticated attacker to cause Vaultwarden to fetch a favicon from an IP‑literal URL supplied in attacker‑controlled HTML. The second‑stage favicon download bypasses URL normalization and the custom DNS resolver, allowing the server to resolve internal or loopback addresses. Successful exploitation can reveal internal services through the returned image, timing, status, or cache behavior. The defect is identified as CWE‑918.

Affected Systems

Vaultwarden servers running any version prior to 1.37.0 with internal icon downloading enabled are affected. The product is provided by dani‑garcia’s Vaultwarden.

Risk and Exploitability

The CVSS score of 5.8 indicates moderate severity. EPSS data is not available, and the vulnerability is not listed in CISA’s KEV catalog. The attack vector is remote, unauthenticated, and relies on the icon download feature; an attacker only needs to host a public page containing a malicious favicon URL. The impact is potential exposure of internal addresses and services, but no arbitrary code execution or privilege escalation beyond the server’s environment.

Remediation

No solution or workaround provided in the CVE record.

OpenCVE Recommended Actions

  • Upgrade Vaultwarden to version 1.37.0 or later, which implements the SSRF fix.
  • Disable internal icon downloading in Vaultwarden configuration if not required.
  • Apply network segmentation or firewall rules to restrict outgoing requests from Vaultwarden to trusted domains only.
  • Enable logging and monitor for unexpected favicon fetches or abnormal outbound traffic from the server.
