Description
The User Frontend – Membership, User Registration, User Profile, User Directory & Content Restriction with Frontend Post Submission plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Privilege Escalation in all versions up to, and including, 4.3.13 via the `post_content` parameter of the `submit_post()` function. The vulnerability exists because the protected-shortcode blocklist guard inspects the `sanitize_textarea_field()` copy of the submitted `post_content`, while the copy actually persisted to the database is processed through `wp_kses()`, whose `wp_kses_no_null()` step strips C0 control bytes — allowing an attacker to inject a single `\x01` byte inside the `[wpuf-registration]` tag name to defeat the `strpos()` blocklist check while the clean, functional shortcode is stored verbatim; `strip_shortcodes()` does not neutralize the stored shortcode either, because the Frontend container that registers it via `add_shortcode()` is only instantiated when `is_admin()` is false, and `admin-ajax` requests have `is_admin() === true`. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with Subscriber-level access and above, to inject a `[wpuf-registration role="editor"]` shortcode into a published post, causing a live Editor-role registration form to be rendered publicly on the frontend that any visitor — or the attacker themselves — can submit to mint a WordPress Editor account with an immediately active privileged session when the default `autologin_after_registration` setting is enabled.

Impact

The vulnerability allows an authenticated WordPress user with at least Subscriber role to inject a specially crafted shortcode into a published post by exploiting a control‑byte bypass in the plugin’s content sanitization. The injected shortcode becomes live on the public site, presenting a registration form that grants Editor privileges to anyone who submits it. The attacker can thus create a fully‑privileged account with an immediately active session, resulting in a full compromise of site administration capabilities.

Affected Systems

WordPress sites running the wedevs:User Frontend – Membership, User Registration, User Profile, User Directory & Content Restriction with Frontend Post Submission plugin version 4.3.13 or older are affected. The vulnerability is present in all releases up to and including 4.3.13.

Risk and Exploitability

The CVSS score of 8.8 indicates high severity, and the EPSS score is not available. The vulnerability is not listed in CISA KEV. Exploitation requires only a legitimate Subscriber account or higher; the attacker must submit a post via the plugin’s Ajax endpoint. Once the malicious shortcode is present, any visitor, including the attacker, can use the rendered registration form to obtain an Editor account with an active privileged session. Given the ease of use of the Ajax submission and the lack of additional constraints, the attack is considered highly likely for suitable targets.

Remediation

No solution or workaround provided in the CVE record.

OpenCVE Recommended Actions

  • Update User Frontend to the latest version (4.3.14 or newer) to remove the vulnerability
  • If an update cannot be applied immediately, deny the submit_post Ajax action for non‑admin users or remove the wpuf-registration shortcode from the front‑end publicly accessible pages
  • Disable the auto‑login after registration setting or set it to require email verification to limit the impact of an injected registration form
