Impact
A flaw in the port_forward function of /cgi-bin/wapi.cgi allows an attacker to craft a Name parameter that is unsanitized and executed by the router’s operating system shell. This results in arbitrary command execution from a remote client, exposing the device to full control over its operating system and network stack. The weakness maps to CWE‑77 (Path Manipulation) and CWE‑78 (OS Command Injection). An attacker could steal credentials, install malware, or disrupt service.
Affected Systems
The vulnerability is limited to WAVLINK routers running the WN579X3‑D model with firmware version V250402. No other WAVLINK models or firmware revisions are listed as affected.
Risk and Exploitability
The CVSS score of 9.4 indicates critical severity. EPSS data is unavailable, but the exploit has already been published and can be used remotely via standard HTTP requests. The vulnerability is not yet listed in CISA’s KEV catalog. Attackers can trigger the flaw from outside the local network by sending a crafted request to the port_forward endpoint, which is likely exposed by default on WAN interfaces.
