Description
The News Kit Addons For Elementor plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'formData' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 1.4.8 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. This is possible because an operator-precedence bug in handle_scripts() causes the admin bundle — and its inlined nekit-admin-nonce — to be enqueued on every admin screen accessible to Subscribers (such as /wp-admin/profile.php), and because sanitize_text_field() is applied to the raw JSON string before json_decode(), allowing angle brackets encoded as \u003c/\u003e to survive sanitization and be restored to literal angle brackets, enabling overwrite of _elementor_data on any post.

Impact

The News Kit Addons For Elementor plugin contains a stored XSS flaw tied to the formData parameter used in the nekit_update_mega_menu_form AJAX action. When an authenticated user with subscriber-level access submits data, insufficient sanitization allows angle brackets encoded as \\u003c or \\u003e to survive policing and be decoded back to literal angle brackets. This lets the attacker inject arbitrary JavaScript into the _elementor_data field of any post, resulting in malicious scripts that execute whenever a page containing that post is viewed by other users. The impact includes defacement, theft of user credentials, and potential session hijacking, all originating from the persistence of malicious code in content elements.

Affected Systems

Vendor: blazethemes; Product: News Kit Addons For Elementor plugin for WordPress. Versions affected are all releases through and including 1.4.8.

Risk and Exploitability

The vulnerability holds a CVSS score of 6.4, indicating moderate severity. EPSS data is unavailable, and the flaw has not been listed in CISA KEV. Exploitation requires the attacker to be authenticated, with at least subscriber privileges, and to have access to the admin interface where the AJAX endpoint is accessible. Once the vulnerable action is triggered, injected scripts persist in post content and execute in the browsers of any user who loads the affected page, making this a persistent threat for sites that rely on this plugin.

Remediation

No solution or workaround provided in the CVE record.

OpenCVE Recommended Actions

  • Update the News Kit Addons For Elementor plugin to the latest available release (1.4.9 or newer), which removes the stored XSS vector.
  • If an immediate update is not possible, block the nekit_update_mega_menu_form AJAX endpoint for subscriber roles using a security plugin or custom code to prevent further injection attempts.
  • After performing the update or block, confirm that stored scripts cannot be added to _elementor_data and that pages no longer load injected JavaScript.
