Description
Tautulli is a Python based monitoring and tracking tool for Plex Media Server. Prior to 2.17.2, the import_config handler and the database_file branch of import_database in plexpy/webserve.py join the attacker-controlled config_file.filename or database_file.filename directly to CACHE_DIR without basename reduction or a containment check. An administrator or caller with the instance API key can submit a multipart filename containing parent-directory segments, causing the upload to be created or overwritten outside CACHE_DIR before file-content validation runs. The write is limited to paths permitted to the Tautulli process, but it can enable configuration tampering, service disruption, or code execution. This issue is fixed in version 2.17.2.

Impact

Tautulli versions prior to 2.17.2 contain an unsanitized file upload handling in import_config and import_database that concatenates attacker‑controlled filenames directly to CACHE_DIR. This allows an administrator or user with the instance API key to craft a multipart filename with parent‑directory segments, resulting in an arbitrary write outside the intended cache directory. The vulnerability corresponds to path traversal and insecure upload validation and can enable configuration tampering, service disruption, or remote code execution if vulnerable files are overwritten or injected.

Affected Systems

The affected product is Tautulli, a Python‑based monitoring tool for Plex Media Server. Any instance running a version earlier than 2.17.2, including all sub‑versions before that release, is susceptible.

Risk and Exploitability

The CVSS score is 7, indicating medium‑to‑high severity. Exploit probability data from EPSS is not available, and the issue is not listed in the CISA KEV catalog. The exploit requires possession of the Tautulli instance API key, which typically an administrator has. Once authenticated, an attacker can upload a malicious filename to place files wherever the Tautulli process has write permission, thus enabling configuration tampering or potentially executing code if the overwrite affects critical runtime files.

Remediation

No solution or workaround provided in the CVE record.

OpenCVE Recommended Actions

  • Upgrade Tautulli to version 2.17.2 or later where the issue is fixed.
  • Restrict the use of the instance API key to trusted administrators only and rotate or revoke compromised keys.
  • Configure filesystem permissions so that the Tautulli process cannot write outside the intended CACHE_DIR, and manually verify that the configuration directory remains read‑only for non‑trusted operations.
