Description
Readest is a modern, feature-rich ebook reader designed for seamless cross-platform access and an intuitive reading experience. Prior to 0.11.10, POST /api/stripe/check in apps/readest-app/src/app/api/stripe/check/route.ts accepted a client-controlled sessionId, retrieved the corresponding Stripe Checkout Session, and granted the paid plan to the authenticated caller without verifying session.metadata.userId. The createOrUpdateSubscription path then updated the plans row keyed by the caller's user identifier rather than the Checkout Session owner. Any authenticated free user with a paid active Checkout Session identifier, including one from the user's own single legitimate purchase, could replay that identifier to upgrade additional accounts without payment. This issue is fixed in version 0.11.10.

AI Analysis

Impact

The flaw is in a subscription‑check endpoint that accepted a client‑supplied Stripe Checkout Session ID without confirming that the session belonged to the caller. By replaying a valid paid Session ID the attacker could grant a paid plan to any authenticated free account, effectively hijacking entitlements and enabling unauthorized access to premium content. This is an authorization bypass reflected in CWE‑639.

Affected Systems

Users running Readest prior to version 0.11.10 on the Readest application are affected. The vulnerable code resides in the POST /api/stripe/check route in the readest‑app component.

Risk and Exploitability

The CVSS score of 6.5 indicates a moderate severity. The vulnerability is exploitable remotely via a web request that an authenticated user can craft. No EPSS score is available, and the issue is not listed in CISA’s KEV catalog, but the impact on subscription integrity is significant because any user can inflate accounts without payment.

Remediation

No solution or workaround provided in the CVE record.

OpenCVE Recommended Actions

  • Upgrade Readest to version 0.11.10 or later where the check verifies session.metadata.userId.
  • Temporarily block or restrict access to the /api/stripe/check endpoint for unauthenticated or free users until the patch is applied.
  • Audit existing subscriptions to identify and revoke any unauthorized upgrades that may have been granted using valid session IDs.
