Description
code16 Sharp is a Laravel-based framework for building content-management and administrative interfaces. Versions before 9.22.5 contain a stored cross-site scripting vulnerability in the rich-text editor because the HTML sanitizer permits the `srcdoc` attribute on iframe elements. Although markup inside `srcdoc` is HTML-encoded during sanitization, browsers decode attribute entities before interpreting the iframe document, allowing an authenticated user with permission to edit an Editor field to store executable JavaScript that runs when another user views the content. Successful exploitation can result in session hijacking, unauthorized actions, account takeover, privilege escalation, or disclosure of administrative data. Version 9.22.5 patches the vulnerability by removing `srcdoc` from the permitted iframe attributes. As a workaround, applications that cannot upgrade should manually sanitize all Editor field content and remove every iframe `srcdoc` attribute before storing or rendering it.

Impact

code16 Sharp is a Laravel-based framework that uses a rich‑text editor for content management. The sanitizer incorrectly permits iframe elements with a srcdoc attribute, allowing an authenticated editor to store JavaScript inside that attribute. When another user views the content, the browser decodes the encoded HTML within srcdoc and executes the script in the user’s context. The stored payload can hijack the user’s session, perform unauthorized actions, take over the account, elevate privileges or reveal administrative data.

Affected Systems

Versions of code16 Sharp earlier than 9.22.5 are affected. The vulnerability specifically exists in the framework’s editor component used by administrators and editors with permission to modify content.

Risk and Exploitability

The CVSS score of 7.3 reflects a high risk of exploitation. Because the attacker must be authenticated to edit content, the attack vector is local, but the stored script runs in the context of any user who views the compromised content. The EPSS score is not available, and the vulnerability is not yet listed in CISA KEV, indicating that known exploits are not publicly documented yet.

Remediation

No solution or workaround provided in the CVE record.

OpenCVE Recommended Actions

  • Upgrade to code16 Sharp version 9.22.5 or later, which removes the srcdoc attribute from allowed iframe attributes.
  • For environments that cannot upgrade, configure the editor or a post‑processing step to strip or reject any iframe srcdoc attribute before storing or rendering, or manually sanitize stored content to remove such tags.
  • Limit editor permissions to a trusted small set of users and consider enforcing a Content Security Policy that blocks script execution from iframes.
