Description
Element Call is a native Matrix video conferencing application. From 0.16.0 until 0.20.3, the standalone Element Call `SPA` logs the `password` URL query parameter. When a user submits an error report, called a rageshake, these logs are shared with the application operator. Users can therefore unintentionally disclose the shared `password` used to encrypt the call, potentially compromising call confidentiality. Avoiding submission of bug reports or debug logs prevents this disclosure path in affected versions. Upgrading does not remove secrets from previously collected `rageshakes`, which require separate cleanup by the log-server operator. This issue is fixed in version 0.20.3.

Impact

Element Call, a native Matrix video conferencing application, recorded the password query parameter in its SPA logs from version 0.16.0 through 0.20.3. When users submitted a rageshake error report, those logs were sent to the application operator, potentially exposing the shared password that encrypts the call. The exposure directly threatens call confidentiality and could allow an attacker who gains access to the logs to decrypt or join the call.

Affected Systems

The vulnerability affects Element Call version 0.16.0 to 0.20.3, released by element-hq. No other vendors or product lines are mentioned as impacted.

Risk and Exploitability

The CVSS score of 5.9 indicates moderate severity, and the EPSS score is not available. The vulnerability is not listed in the CISA KEV catalog. Exploitation requires access to the logs, typically provided to the application operator. The likely attack vector is an attacker or compromised operator who can read the logs containing the password. Upgrading does not retroactively remove secrets from previously collected logs, so post‑upgrade cleanup remains essential.

Remediation

No solution or workaround provided in the CVE record.

OpenCVE Recommended Actions

  • Upgrade Element Call to version 0.20.3 or later to eliminate the logging issue
  • Purge any previously stored rageshake logs that may contain the shared password from the log server
  • Until the logs are purged, refrain from submitting rageshake reports or debug logs that could expose passwords
