Impact
The protocol’s skip function in multiple Apache Thrift bindings omitted the binding’s recursion limit, allowing a message with deeply nested unknown fields to consume excessive stack space and crash the process. This results in denial of service for any service using the affected bindings. No evidence of arbitrary code execution is provided in the CVE description, so the impact remains a crash and service outage. The weakness is labeled as CWE‑674 and CWE‑770.
Affected Systems
Apache Thrift versions before 0.25.0. Affected language bindings include the Python C++ accelerator (not the pure‑Python protocols), the PHP library and its thrift_protocol extension, and the Perl, Lua, Smalltalk, and OCaml libraries.
Risk and Exploitability
The CVSS score of 8.7 indicates a high severity threat. EPSS data is unavailable and the vulnerability is not listed in CISA KEV. Attackers can craft a Thrift message that exceeds the recursion depth; the attack vector is inferred to be remote over the network interface that receives Thrift traffic. Successful exploitation leads to a stack overflow that terminates the service, causing a denial of service.
