Description
A vulnerability in the web-based user interface of Cisco License On-Prem, formerly Cisco Smart Software Manager On-Prem (SSM On-Prem), could allow an authenticated, remote attacker to execute arbitrary commands on the underlying operating system.

This vulnerability is due to improper validation of user-supplied content within configurations that are submitted to the web-based management interface. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by updating configurations within the web-based management interface. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary commands on the underlying operating system with root privileges.
To exploit this vulnerability, the attacker must have valid administrative credentials. Because only an attacker who already holds system administrator privileges can exploit the vulnerability, the only additional privileges gained include the ability to turn off the system, which an administrative user could not normally do.

Impact

The vulnerability allows a remote authenticated attacker to execute arbitrary system commands on the underlying OS. This command injection flaw arises from insufficient validation of user-supplied configuration data in the web-based interface. Once exploited, the attacker obtains root privileges, which can be used to shut down the system or alter critical settings.

Affected Systems

Affected systems are Cisco License On-Prem, formerly Cisco Smart Software Manager On-Prem, used internally in many organizations. The CVE list does not specify limited versions, so any deployed instance running the unmanaged web interface is potentially impacted.

Risk and Exploitability

The CVSS score of 4.9 indicates moderate severity. EPSS is unavailable, and the vulnerability is not listed in CISA KEV. The exploit requires the attacker to already hold administrative credentials, so the risk is confined to environments where privileged accounts are compromised or mismanaged. Attackers that gain admin access can then run arbitrary commands with root level privileges, providing complete control over the host.

Remediation

No solution or workaround provided in the CVE record.

OpenCVE Recommended Actions

  • If a Cisco security update is available, install the latest version of Cisco License On-Prem to remove the command injection flaw.
  • Limit access to the web-based interface by restricting it to a secure internal network and requiring strong, unique administrator credentials.
  • Implement input validation or sanitization for configuration data to prevent command injection; consider disabling any console features that directly execute system commands.
  • Monitor system and web‑interface logs for suspicious configuration changes and disable the web interface temporarily if a critical vulnerability is discovered but a patch is not yet available.
