Description
Lychee is a free, open-source photo-management tool. Prior to 7.7.0, GET /docs/api exposes the Scramble-generated OpenAPI documentation configured by config/scramble.php to unauthenticated callers after installation, with observed response size and latency suggesting that the schema is regenerated without an application-level cache. A remote attacker can repeatedly request the unthrottled route to consume server CPU and obtain a detailed map of the API surface and parameter schema. This issue is fixed in version 7.7.0.

Impact

The vulnerability allows unauthenticated users to request the /docs/api route, which regenerates the OpenAPI schema on every request without any caching. This leads to unnecessary CPU consumption and provides the attacker with a comprehensive map of the API surface, potentially exposing sensitive endpoints and parameter details.

Affected Systems

The issue affects installations of Lychee provided by LycheeOrg before version 7.7.0. Any deployment of Lychee that has not been upgraded to the 7.7.0 release or later is vulnerable.

Risk and Exploitability

The CVSS score of 6.9 classifies the flaw as moderate severity. The EPSS score of less than 1% indicates a low likelihood of exploitation in the wild, and the vulnerability is not included in the CISA KEV catalog. A remote attacker can exploit the exposed route via standard HTTP GET requests, repeatedly triggering unthrottled regeneration of the schema to exhaust server CPU resources and gather detailed API information.

Remediation

No solution or workaround provided in the CVE record.

OpenCVE Recommended Actions

  • Upgrade Lychee to version 7.7.0 or later.
  • Configure the web server or Laravel middleware to restrict access to the /docs/api route to authenticated users only.
  • Implement rate limiting or enable caching for the OpenAPI schema generation to prevent repeated regeneration.
