Impact
Apache Camel’s SMB component concatenates the configured remote directory with file names from the server’s directory listing to form absolute paths without sanitizing or validating that the resulting path remains inside the intended directory. This flaw allows a server to provide file names containing traversal segments, which Camel will resolve to locations outside the polled directory. The issue can be exploited to read, delete, or rename files beyond the configured boundary using the consumer’s credentials, violating confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
Affected Systems
Affected products are Apache Camel from the Apache Software Foundation. Versions ranging from 4.2.0 up to but excluding 4.18.5, and from 4.19.0 up to but excluding 4.22.1, are vulnerable. Users on the 4.22.x stream should upgrade to 4.22.1, users on the 4.18.x stream should upgrade to 4.18.5, and the 4.14.x stream is end‑of‑life and requires migration to a supported release.
Risk and Exploitability
With a CVSS score of 7.4, the vulnerability poses a moderate to high risk. The attack vector is remote: an SMB server that returns manipulated directory listings can cause Camel to perform file operations outside the intended directory without authentication on the control channel. EPSS data is unavailable and the issue is not listed in the CISA KEV catalog. An attacker can read, delete, or rename files beyond the configured polling directory using the credentials of the Camel endpoint.
