Description
A vulnerability exists in NGINX Plus and NGINX Open Source when a map directive uses regex matching and the root directive or access log format references the map's regex capture variables before referencing the map output variable. Alternatively, the same result could be achieved by using a non-cacheable variable in a string expression under certain conditions. An unauthenticated attacker along with conditions beyond their control can exploit this vulnerability by sending crafted HTTP requests. This may cause a heap buffer overflow in the NGINX worker process leading to a restart. Additionally, attackers can execute code on systems with Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR) disabled or when the attacker can bypass ASLR.

Impact:
This vulnerability may allow remote attackers to cause a denial-of-service (DoS) on the NGINX system or to possibly trigger a code execution. There is no control plane exposure; this is a data plane issue only.

Note: Software versions which have reached End of Technical Support (EoTS) are not evaluated.

Impact

The flaw occurs when a map directive in NGINX uses regex matching and the root or access log format references the map’s regex capture variables before the map’s output variable is referenced. This triggers a heap buffer overflow in the worker process, causing a restart, and if Address Space Layout Randomization is disabled or can be bypassed, it may allow execution of arbitrary code. The vulnerability can be triggered by an unauthenticated attacker with crafted HTTP requests, leading to a denial of service or possible code execution.

Affected Systems

The vulnerability affects both F5 NGINX Open Source and NGINX Plus. Specific version information is not provided, so any deployment of these products without an applied update may be impacted. End of Technical Support releases are excluded from the evaluation.

Risk and Exploitability

The CVSS score of 9.2 marks this flaw as critical. The EPSS score is 0.00554%, indicating a very low exploitation probability. The vulnerability is not listed in the CISA KEV catalog. The attack vector is unauthenticated and limited to the data plane, requiring only that the attacker send crafted requests. While the exploitation probability is low, the high severity and the possibility of code execution when ASLR is disabled make this a serious risk.

Remediation

Vendor Workaround

To mitigate this vulnerability, do not use unnamed captures. Use named captures instead and limit their usage to the block with the regex match.

OpenCVE Recommended Actions

  • Update NGINX to the latest secure version that contains the vendor’s fix for the map directive regex overflow.
  • If an immediate update is not possible, modify all map directives to use named captures only and restrict capture usage to the block that performs the regex match, as recommended in the vendor’s workaround advice.
  • Ensure that Address Space Layout Randomization is enabled on the systems running NGINX to mitigate the potential code execution path.
