Impact
A stack‑based buffer overflow (CWE‑121) occurs in the host firmware boot process image validation path of IBM PowerVM Hypervisor firmware. An attacker able to access the service processor can supply a maliciously crafted update image, leading to arbitrary code execution on the underlying host. This flaw can compromise confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the affected system.
Affected Systems
IBM PowerVM Hypervisor firmware versions FW1060.00 through FW1060.81, FW1110.00 through FW1110.31, and FW1120.00 through FW1120.01 are vulnerable. Impacted Power System models include the Power 10 and Power 11 machines listed in the advisory, such as E1080, S1022, S1024, E1050, S1012, S1112, S1122, L1122, E1180, S1124, L1124, S1114, E1150, and others.
Risk and Exploitability
The vulnerability carries a CVSS score of 8.2 and is not listed in CISA KEV. EPSS information is unavailable, indicating no current quantitative exploitation probability. The flaw requires service‑processor access; based on the description, it is inferred that an attacker must control the service processor to submit a malicious firmware image. If successful, arbitrary code execution on the host is possible, allowing full compromise of confidentiality, integrity, and availability on the affected PowerVM system.
