Description
The Complianz GDPR/CCPA Cookie Consent Banner plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via Comment Content via yotu-wp Cookie-Blocker Filter in all versions up to, and including, 7.5.5 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. The exploit bypasses WordPress's wp_kses comment sanitization because the payload uses only allow-listed tags and hides executable tokens inside quoted attribute values as plain text; the XSS is only realized when Complianz's own output-buffer filter performs str_replace() rewrites that break out of the attribute context, and requires the comment to be approved before it executes for visitors.

Impact

The Complianz GDPR/CCPA Cookie Consent Banner plugin allows an unauthenticated attacker to store a malicious script in comment content, bypassing WordPress's default wp_kses sanitization. The payload exploits a filter that rewrites output, breaking out of quoted attribute contexts and enabling execution when the comment is approved. An attacker can then host arbitrary JavaScript that runs on the pages of site visitors, enabling session hijacking, data theft, or defacement.

Affected Systems

WordPress sites running the Complianz GDPR / CCPA Cookie Consent Banner plugin versions up to and including 7.5.5 are susceptible. The vulnerability exists in all releases of the plugin before the updated version that removes the insecure filter.

Risk and Exploitability

The CVSS score of 7.2 reflects a high impact, and the EPSS score of < 1% indicates a low but non‑zero exploitation probability, while the lack of authentication requirements lowers the immediate exploitation barrier. The vulnerability is not yet listed in the CISA KEV catalog. Attackers can achieve cross‑site script execution by posting an approved comment, so the risk is significant for any site that allows public comments and has the yotu‑wp integration active.

Remediation

No solution or workaround provided in the CVE record.

OpenCVE Recommended Actions

  • Update Complianz GDPR/CCPA Cookie Consent Banner to a version newer than 7.5.5 to remove the vulnerable filter
  • If an update cannot be applied immediately, temporarily disable the yotu‑wp integration or remove the plugin’s comment handling capability until a patch is available
  • Deploy a web application firewall rule to block malicious script payloads that exploit the output buffer rewrite
  • Verify that no stored malicious scripts remain in approved comments and clear them if present
