Impact
OpenClaw versions from 2026.5.28 to before 2026.8.1 mishandle the listing of tar.bz2 archives used for skill installers. A crafted archive can replace the reported entry list with entries that exceed the allowed limits, causing the extraction process to create files beyond the intended budget. The flaw does not launch code, but it allows over‑limit files or excessive entry counts to be written to the skill tools directory, which can later consume significant disk space or inode resources.
Affected Systems
OpenClaw (npm package 'openclaw') skill installer in all releases between 2026.5.28 and 2026.8.0 inclusive. The issue specifically targets the handling of tar.bz2 and tbz2 archives used to install new skills.
Risk and Exploitability
The CVSS score of 2.3 marks this vulnerability as low severity. No EPSS data is available and the vulnerability has not been listed in the CISA KEV catalog, indicating a low likelihood of widespread exploitation. Attackers would need to persuade an operator to approve a malicious skill archive or gain control of the approval process; otherwise the flaw cannot execute arbitrary code or elevate privileges. If successfully triggered, the result is limited to denial of service through exhausting storage resources.
