Impact
The vulnerability arises from the simple-git library omitting the VISUAL environment variable during the preparation of environment variables for Git commands. A consuming application that forwards attacker-controlled environment values to simple-git can cause Git to run an attacker-specified editor during operations like commit amendment or interactive rebase. The editor runs with the privileges of the Node.js process, providing an avenue for remote code execution. This flaw is a form of command injection (CWE-184) and OS command injection (CWE-78).
Affected Systems
Node.js applications that use the simple-git/argv-parser package prior to version 2.0.1 are affected. The issue specifically applies to any deployment where the library receives environment variables from external input and does not otherwise enforce safe editor settings.
Risk and Exploitability
The base score of 9.2 indicates a high likelihood of a severe compromise if exploited. The EPSS score is not available, but the flaw is not listed in the CISA KEV catalog. Attackers can target the application via environment injection, then trigger Git operations that respect the VISUAL variable, leading to execution of arbitrary shell commands within the Node.js process context.
