Impact
The vulnerability is an incorrect authorization control in the Updater component of Google Chrome. Based on the description, it is inferred that before version 155.0.8059.79, a local user could invoke the updater with elevated privileges, allowing the execution of arbitrary code outside the security sandbox. This flaw gives the user the ability to run malicious binaries or scripts with the privileges of the browser process, effectively compromising the entire system.
Affected Systems
Google Chrome versions prior to 155.0.8059.79 on all supported desktop platforms. The issue affects the updater mechanism that ships with the stable channel. Users of older stable builds are at risk.
Risk and Exploitability
The CVSS score of 9.6 indicates a critical severity, while the EPSS score of fewer than 1% suggests that, as of today, the exploitation rate remains low. The flaw is registered as a local code execution vulnerability and is not listed in the CISA KEV catalog. Based on the description, it is inferred that an attacker would need local access with the ability to run programs; via that precondition they could trigger the updater to execute arbitrary code.
