Description
UNSUPPORTED WHEN ASSIGNED Improper restriction of XML external entity references in Apache Abdera allows an attacker to access sensitive data or make server-side requests when an application parses attacker-controlled XML with Abdera.

This issue affects Apache Abdera: all versions.

Apache Abdera is retired and no longer supported, so we do not plan to release a version that fixes this issue. Users are recommended to migrate to a maintained alternative. Applications that cannot migrate should ensure that untrusted XML cannot reach the affected Abdera parser or JDBC adapter parsing paths. Actively maintained downstream products may still be impacted if they include an affected Abdera artifact.

NOTE: This vulnerability only affects products that are no longer supported by the maintainer.

Impact

The vulnerability arises from Apache Abdera’s inadequate handling of XML external entity references when parsing Atom documents. Attackers can supply crafted XML that forces the parser to resolve external entities, enabling them to read internal files or send HTTP requests to internal networks. This results in confidentiality violations and potential server‑side request forgery, but does not provide arbitrary code execution.

Affected Systems

All editions of Apache Abdera, which has been retired and is no longer maintained. Any downstream product that bundles an unpatched Abdera component is also affected.

Risk and Exploitability

The CVSS score of 8.7 reflects the high severity of the flaw, and the absence of a patch means the vulnerability remains exploitable indefinitely for installations that continue to use Abdera. The EPSS score is not available, yet the lack of updates implies a persistent exploitation risk. The issue is not listed in the CISA KEV catalog. Exploitation requires delivery of malicious XML to an application that uses Abdera, making the attack vector application‑dependent. The primary impact is data exposure and server‑side request forgery rather than remote code execution.

Remediation

No solution or workaround provided in the CVE record.

OpenCVE Recommended Actions

  • Migrate from Apache Abdera to a supported, actively maintained XML/Atom parsing library
  • If migration is impossible, ensure that no untrusted XML is passed to Abdera parsing endpoints or its JDBC adapter processing paths
  • Disable or remove the JDBC adapter for XML handling if it cannot be guaranteed that only trusted data is processed
