Description
OPNsense is a FreeBSD based firewall and routing platform. Prior to 26.1.11 and 26.4.1p1, authenticated Web UI or API users with delegated access to affected settings can submit CR or LF characters in fields expected to contain one line, causing generated privileged service configuration files to contain additional attacker-controlled directives or policy lines. The confirmed Dnsmasq path includes dhcp_boot.filename, dhcp_boot.servername, dhcp_boot.address, and dhcp_options.value, which are rendered into /usr/local/etc/dnsmasq.conf; access through page-services-dnsforwarder covers api/dnsmasq/*. Related affected fields span OpenVPN, DHCPv6, Unbound, IPsec, NTP, PPP or MPD, Monit, firewall, sudo, WebGUI, and System General configuration. Applying or restarting the affected service can alter behavior beyond the delegated setting, create service-side files, cross RBAC boundaries, or cause denial of service. Line injection through Monit mail password and adjacent Monit text fields into /usr/local/etc/monitrc demonstrated root command execution. Arbitrary shell command execution was not confirmed for the Dnsmasq path. This issue is fixed in versions 26.1.11 and 26.4.1p1.

Impact

Authenticated users with delegated access in the OPNsense Web UI or API can inject carriage return or line feed characters into fields that are expected to contain single lines. The interpreter of these inputs writes the result into privileged service configuration files, thereby allowing attacker‑controlled directives or policy lines to be added. In the Monit case the injection enabled root command execution, while other services such as dnsmasq, OpenVPN, and DHCP did not confirm direct shell access but can still lead to altered service behavior, escalation of privileges or denial of service.

Affected Systems

All users of the OPNsense core application prior to version 26.1.11 or 26.4.1p1 are affected. The vulnerable fields appear in configuration pages for dnsmasq (including dhcp_boot.filename, dhcp_boot.servername, dhcp_boot.address, dhcp_options.value), OpenVPN, DHCPv6, Unbound, IPsec, NTP, PPP or MPD, Monit, firewall rules, sudo, WebGUI, and general system settings.

Risk and Exploitability

The vulnerability scores a CVSS of 8.1, indicating a high impact. The EPSS score is not available, and the advisory is not catalogued in CISA's KEV list. Exploitation requires the attacker to be authenticated with delegated permissions that allow editing of the affected settings; no public exploit is known. Downstream effects vary but can include unrestricted configuration changes, possible service disruption, and, in at least one instance, execution of arbitrary commands by the root user.

Remediation

No solution or workaround provided in the CVE record.

OpenCVE Recommended Actions

  • Upgrade OPNsense to version 26.1.11 or newer 26.4.1p1 to apply the vendor fix
  • Restrict or sanitize user input in the identified GUI and API fields by stripping carriage return and line feed characters before saving configuration
  • Revoke or restrict delegated permissions that permit editing of the vulnerable configuration areas to minimize the attack surface
  • Monitor configuration files such as /usr/local/etc/dnsmasq.conf and /usr/local/etc/monitrc for unauthorized modifications
  • Apply additional hardening such as limiting root privileges for the Monit service to prevent command execution
