Description
Heimdall is a cloud native Identity Aware Proxy and Access Control Decision service. Prior to version 0.17.17, when the trusted_proxies option is configured, heimdall extracts client IP addresses from the Forwarded (for= parameter) and X-Forwarded-For headers and exposes them as Request.ClientIPAddresses to the rule pipeline. However, extracted values are not validated to be syntactically valid IP addresses. Arbitrary strings, malformed IP literals, and RFC 7239 unknown values and obfuscated identifiers are accepted without further checks. In addition, the Forwarded header parser splits on , and ; without accounting for RFC 7239 quoted strings, which can cause a single quoted value to be parsed as multiple entries, with fragments — including trailing quote characters — treated as independent addresses. This issue has been patched in version 0.17.17.

Impact

Heimdall, a cloud native Identity Aware Proxy, extracts client IP addresses from the Forwarded (for=) and X-Forwarded-For headers when the trusted_proxies option is enabled. Prior to v0.17.17, the extracted values are not validated as syntactically correct IP addresses; malformed or obfuscated strings are accepted as valid IPs. This allows an attacker to supply crafted header values that impersonate any IP address, potentially bypassing access control decisions based on client IP and enabling unauthorized access to protected resources.

Affected Systems

The vulnerability affects the Heimdall product from dadrus, specifically all releases before v0.17.17. Users running any earlier version with the trusted_proxies setting enabled are exposed to this flaw, while v0.17.17 and later contain the fix.

Risk and Exploitability

The CVSS score of 7 indicates a high severity, and the absence of an EPSS or KEV listing suggests a moderate exploitation likelihood under current public knowledge. The issue is exploitable remotely through the injection of malicious Forwarded or X-Forwarded-For headers; a threat actor can target any externally reachable instance configured to accept trusted proxies, making the attack vector attainable over standard HTTP/S communication.

Remediation

No solution or workaround provided in the CVE record.

OpenCVE Recommended Actions

  • Upgrade Heimdall to version 0.17.17 or later.
  • If an upgrade is not immediately possible, disable the trusted_proxies configuration or restrict it to strictly validated proxies.
  • Implement application or network layer validation to ensure Forwarded and X-Forwarded-For headers contain only syntactically valid IP addresses as defined by RFC 7239.
  • Monitor incoming IP metrics for suspicious or spoofed values and alert on anomalous patterns.
