Description
Improper Control of Generation of Code ('Code Injection') in Apache OFBiz 24.09 before 24.09.08 on all platforms allows a remote unauthenticated attacker to execute arbitrary code on the server by staging crafted widget XML in a multipart upload and overriding the mainDecoratorLocation used by a manager login route through an anonymous JSON request, causing OFBiz to load the staged XML through its live screen descriptor mechanism and evaluate an unsandboxed Groovy expression while rendering the authentication-failure page. Further validation established the following:

-- The exploit does not require a malformed or incomplete multipart body: a well-formed multipart request that is kept in flight and then allowed to complete normally is sufficient.

-- The screen loader reads the widget XML from a live process file descriptor while the upload is streaming, rather than from any file the attacker persists to disk.

-- The same underlying issue is also reachable through the public, explicitly unauthenticated /sfa/control/editPortalPageColumnWidth route, returning command output directly in an HTTP 200 response — it is not limited to the login-failure rendering path used in the original report.

Users are recommended to upgrade to version 24.09.08, which fixes this issue.

Impact

Apache OFBiz versions prior to 24.09.08 are vulnerable to code injection because the application improperly controls generated code. An attacker can deliver specially crafted widget XML via a multipart upload or exploit the public /sfa/control/editPortalPageColumnWidth route. The system loads the XML through its live screen descriptor mechanism and evaluates an unsandboxed Groovy expression during authentication‑failure rendering, allowing the attacker to execute arbitrary code on the host.

Affected Systems

The vulnerability affects the Apache Software Foundation’s Apache OFBiz product, specifically version 24.09 on all supported operating systems. Any deployment that has not yet applied the 24.09.08 security update is at risk.

Risk and Exploitability

EPSS data is not available and the vulnerability is not listed in CISA KEV, but the description shows that a remote unauthenticated attacker can exploit the flaw. A well‑formed multipart request or an unauthenticated GET to /sfa/control/editPortalPageColumnWidth triggers the vulnerable code path, enabling arbitrary Groovy code execution. The lack of authentication requirement and the ability to inject and run code indicate a high likelihood of exploitation in exposed environments.

Remediation

No solution or workaround provided in the CVE record.

OpenCVE Recommended Actions

  • Upgrade Apache OFBiz to version 24.09.08 or later, which contains the official fix for this widget XML code injection issue.
  • Block or restrict unauthenticated access to the multipart upload endpoint used for login page widgets and to the /sfa/control/editPortalPageColumnWidth route, for example by configuring the web server or firewall to allow only trusted IPs.
  • Disable or restrict the live screen descriptor feature that evaluates external Groovy expressions, or apply a sandbox to Groovy execution to prevent arbitrary code from running if an immediate upgrade is not possible.
