Description
Improper Input Validation vulnerability in Apache Camel Tika component.

This issue affects Apache Camel: from 4.0.0 before 4.18.5, from 4.19.0 before 4.22.1.

The Tika producer mapped every metadata key parsed out of the submitted document onto the Exchange as a header, with no filter applied. Document metadata is attacker-controlled content: the party that supplies the file chooses the metadata keys it carries. A crafted document could therefore set Exchange headers that the rest of the route depends on, including headers in the Camel namespace such as CamelFileName, which downstream components use to decide where content is written. The pattern is the same header-injection class as the consumer advisories published previously, reached here through parsed file content rather than through a protocol header.

Upgrade to Apache Camel 4.23.0, which fixes the issue. Users on the 4.18.x LTS releases stream should upgrade to 4.18.5. Users on the 4.22.x LTS releases stream should upgrade to 4.22.1. Parsed document metadata is now filtered through a HeaderFilterStrategy before it is mapped onto the Exchange. A route that was reading a metadata-derived header the filter now blocks will see it missing. For deployments that cannot upgrade immediately, strip the Camel namespace after the Tika producer with removeHeaders("Camel*") before any component that acts on those headers.

Impact

The vulnerability is an improper input validation flaw in the Camel Tika component, where parsed document metadata is mapped directly to Exchange headers without filtering. An attacker can craft a document embedding arbitrary header keys, such as CamelFileName, allowing the route to rewrite critical routing parameters and direct output to unintended locations. This header injection can potentially lead to file system modification or other unintended behavior, impacting confidentiality, integrity, or availability of the system.

Affected Systems

Apache Camel from version 4.0.0 up to but not including 4.18.5, and from 4.19.0 up to but not including 4.22.1. The 4.18.x LTS stream is addressed by upgrading to 4.18.5, while the 4.22.x LTS stream is addressed by upgrading to 4.22.1. Versions 4.23.0 and later contain the fix with filtered metadata handling.

Risk and Exploitability

The CVSS score of 6.5 indicates a moderate impact, and the EPSS score is not available, suggesting no current evidence of widespread exploitation. The vulnerability is not listed in the CISA KEV catalog. Attack requires the ability to supply a document to the Tika producer; no explicit network boundary is necessary, but the threat vector is local or application-level injection via file ingestion. If exploited, an attacker could manipulate routing decisions to write data to arbitrary paths or override application logic.

Remediation

Vendor Solution

Upgrade to Apache Camel 4.23.0, which fixes the issue. Users on the 4.18.x LTS releases stream should upgrade to 4.18.5. Users on the 4.22.x LTS releases stream should upgrade to 4.22.1. Parsed document metadata is now filtered through a HeaderFilterStrategy before it is mapped onto the Exchange. A route that was reading a metadata-derived header the filter now blocks will see it missing.

Vendor Workaround

For deployments that cannot upgrade immediately, strip the Camel namespace after the Tika producer with removeHeaders("Camel*") before any component that acts on those headers.

OpenCVE Recommended Actions

  • Upgrade to Apache Camel 4.23.0, or to 4.18.5 for the 4.18.x LTS stream, or to 4.22.1 for the 4.22.x LTS stream, to apply the fixed header filtering.
  • If an immediate upgrade is not possible, apply the temporary workaround by stripping Camel namespace headers after the Tika producer with removeHeaders("Camel*") before any downstream component processes those headers.
  • Configure or enable a HeaderFilterStrategy to filter out unsafe headers from parsed document metadata before mapping them onto the Exchange, ensuring no attacker‑controlled headers can influence routing.
