Description
Exposure of Data Element to Wrong Session vulnerability in Apache Camel AS2 component.

This issue affects Apache Camel: from 4.0.0 before 4.18.5, from 4.19.0 before 4.22.1.

Signing material belonging to an individual request was stored in state that is shared across requests rather than confined to the request being processed. Where a deployment serves more than one trading partner, concurrent or successive requests could therefore observe each other's material, and a Message Disposition Notification could be signed with the key of a partner other than the one the receipt was for. The result is cross-partner key confusion: a receipt attributable to the wrong partner, and one partner's signing material used while handling another partner's exchange. AS2 deployments are typically multi-partner by design, so the condition is reached by ordinary concurrent traffic rather than by anything the attacker must arrange.

Upgrade to Apache Camel 4.23.0, which fixes the issue. Users on the 4.18.x LTS releases stream should upgrade to 4.18.5. Users on the 4.22.x LTS releases stream should upgrade to 4.22.1. Per-request signing keys are now confined to the request being processed in ResponseMDN. For deployments that cannot upgrade immediately, run a separate Camel context per trading partner so that no signing material is shared between them.

Impact

Apache Camel’s AS2 component stores signing material in global state shared across requests instead of confining it to the current request. In deployments serving multiple trading partners, concurrent or sequential requests can expose each other’s private keys, causing a Message Disposition Notification to be signed with the wrong partner’s key. This misattribution leads to receipts that appear to come from a partner that did not send them, compromising the integrity assurances between business partners.

Affected Systems

Apache Camel releases from 4.0.0 up to but excluding 4.18.5, and from 4.19.0 up to but excluding 4.22.1 are affected. The flaw manifests in any deployment of the AS2 component that shares a Camel context among more than one trading partner.

Risk and Exploitability

The vulnerability has a CVSS score of 6.5, indicating moderate severity. No EPSS data is available and it is not listed in the CISA KEV catalog, suggesting that widespread exploitation has not yet been observed. However, the condition is satisfied by ordinary concurrent traffic in shared contexts, so an attacker can trigger the key confusion simply by sending multiple AS2 requests to the same Camel service without special preparation, potentially obtaining and misusing other partners’ signing material.

Remediation

Vendor Solution

Upgrade to Apache Camel 4.23.0, which fixes the issue. Users on the 4.18.x LTS releases stream should upgrade to 4.18.5. Users on the 4.22.x LTS releases stream should upgrade to 4.22.1. Per-request signing keys are now confined to the request being processed in ResponseMDN.

Vendor Workaround

For deployments that cannot upgrade immediately, run a separate Camel context per trading partner so that no signing material is shared between them.

OpenCVE Recommended Actions

  • Upgrade to Apache Camel 4.23.0; for users on the 4.18.x LTS stream upgrade to 4.18.5; for users on the 4.22.x LTS stream upgrade to 4.22.1.
  • If an upgrade cannot be performed immediately, configure a separate Camel context for each trading partner so that signing material is not shared between them.
  • After applying the patch or isolating contexts, audit MDN signatures and relevant log entries to confirm that receipts are correctly tied to their intended partners and to detect any residual key confusion.
