Impact
The vulnerability resides in the netfs module of the Linux kernel. When the first subrequest of a write operation fails, the loop in netfs_unbuffered_write exits without initializing the return value ret. As a result, callers may receive an arbitrary error code instead of the correct write error or the number of bytes actually written. For synchronous writes, netfs_unbuffered_write_iter_locked can propagate an unrelated error through CIFS if cifs_prepare_write fails to reopen the file or obtain credits. This flaw can lead to incorrect status reports, data integrity issues, or denial of service if an attacker can trigger the error path.
Affected Systems
All Linux kernel releases are mentioned; however, the advisory does not list specific version ranges. The affected vendor is the generic Linux kernel, as identified by the CNA entry Linux:Linux and the CPE string for the Linux kernel.
Risk and Exploitability
The CVSS score of 5.5 indicates moderate severity, and the EPSS score of < 1% suggests a low probability of exploitation at present. The vulnerability is not listed in the CISA KEV catalog. The attack vector is remote or local in environments where CIFS write operations are performed, as the fault is triggered when cifs_prepare_write fails. Exploitation would require the ability to induce the failure path to cause incorrect error reporting or denial of service, and no known public exploits exist.
