Description
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

wifi: p54: validate firmware record lengths

The p54 firmware parser accesses component ID and component version
records without checking that their lengths cover the fields being read.
A malformed record can therefore make the parser read past the record.

Validate the component ID and component version record lengths before
accessing their data. The descriptor record is also checked against the
shortest descriptor length found in the supported firmware images.

Reject descriptor values that underflow the RX offset or produce an empty
RX range before updating the driver state.

Impact

The kernel p54 firmware parser fails to validate the lengths of component ID and component version records before accessing their data. A malformed firmware record can therefore cause the parser to read past the intended buffer boundaries, potentially leaking sensitive kernel memory or triggering a crash. The vulnerability is specific to the Wi‑Fi driver’s firmware loading logic.

Affected Systems

All Linux kernel releases that contain the vulnerable p54 firmware parser implementation are affected. Version information is not specified in the advisory, so any kernel prior to the fix that includes the vulnerable code is vulnerable.

Risk and Exploitability

The likely attack vector requires an attacker to supply a maliciously crafted firmware image to the affected Wi‑Fi device; this is inferred from the description that the parser reads firmware records without length checks. The risk is therefore mainly local or demands physical or reset access to inject firmware, as no network‑based exploit path is documented. The EPSS score is not available and the vulnerability is not listed in CISA KEV, indicating a lower exploitation probability; nevertheless, if a high‑risk environment receives unsupervised firmware updates, the potential for information disclosure or a kernel crash could be serious.

Remediation

No solution or workaround provided in the CVE record.

OpenCVE Recommended Actions

  • Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version that contains the patch for the p54 firmware parser
  • If an update is not immediately available, temporarily disable the p54 Wi‑Fi device or unload the driver until the patch is installed to prevent the malformed firmware from being parsed
  • Monitor system logs for segmentation faults or invalid memory access messages related to the p54 driver to verify that no malformed firmware has been injected
