Impact
Twisted’s IRC server implementation buffers all incoming bytes without a line feed and imposes no maximum line length before authentication, allowing an unauthenticated client to send an arbitrarily long sequence of data that will grow the per-connection buffer until the process runs out of memory and terminates all active users. The flaw results in a denial of service whereby the entire server becomes unavailable until it is restarted.
Affected Systems
All Twisted installations that include the IRC protocol module twisted.words.protocols.irc.IRC and its subclass twisted.words.service.IRCUser, specifically any version prior to Twisted 26.10.0rc1.
Risk and Exploitability
The CVSS score of 7.5 indicates a high severity of this vulnerability, and the EPSS score is not available, but the flaw can be exercised remotely without authentication by simply establishing a TCP connection to the IRC port and sending data that never contains a newline. Because it is not listed in the CISA KEV catalog, no widespread exploitation data is known, yet the unbounded buffer makes it a useful target for attackers seeking to crash the service with minimal effort.
