Description
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

s390/ctcm: Prevent XID null dereference

The mpc_validate_xid() function sets grp->saved_xid2->xid2_flag2 to 0x40
to signal XID validation error. If peer XID is NULL or r/w channel
pairing mismatch happens, grp->saved_xid2 is never initialized. An
attempt to set the flag in such case leads to NULL dereference.

Fix this by using the always available priv->xid->xid2_flag2 instead of
grp->saved_xid2->xid2_flag2 for validation errors.

Impact

A NULL dereference occurs when the kernel attempts to set a validation flag on an uninitialized structure in the s390/ctcm subsystem, leading to a kernel crash. This results in a denial of service, potentially causing the system to become unavailable or requiring a reboot to recover.

Affected Systems

The affected product is the Linux kernel running on s390 hardware. Specific kernel versions are not enumerated in the data, but any kernel that contains the vulnerable mpc_validate_xid() implementation and has not yet been updated with the commit referenced in the Git links is vulnerable.

Risk and Exploitability

The exploit requires privileged code execution or the ability to influence the s390 channel pairings; it is not remotely exploitable from user space. The EPSS score is not available and the vulnerability is not listed in CISA KEV, indicating limited commercial exploitation. Without a public exploit and with a local‑privilege requirement, the risk is moderate to high for environments where the affected kernel runs and receives no patch.

Remediation

No solution or workaround provided in the CVE record.

OpenCVE Recommended Actions

  • Apply the kernel patch that fixes the XID null dereference (from the provided git commit)
  • Reboot the system so the updated kernel takes effect
  • Configure the bootloader to load only the patched kernel, preventing accidental boot into older vulnerable versions
